Knowledgeable coaches such as Marvin Lewis and executives such as Rick Smith seem really poised at this stage to have a valid opportunity with multiple teams. There's hope that 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will have better luck this time around.
"The ancient decisions being made by owners, in an effort to get a head start, could turn into more of a trend moving forward," Graves said.
Obviously, this is not about one hiring cycle, or a single blip. It is about a course correction in the way owners think and operate. And Graves wants to enlarge the range of the thinking into all facets below the NFL's umbrella: NFL Films, NFL Media, and most of ventures of this type. He, and lots of more, want to observe the same management-level opportunities supplied in these ventures also, and is already working on a presentation to this end for its spring meeting in March.
"This is something which needs a holistic approach," Graves said. "It is about paring the cover back on the entire NFL umbrella and examining diversity when it comes to other businesses, and in certain instances it is much worse there than what we've observed on the football side."
